About the Artist

Q: How would you describe the art you make?
A: Most often, my creative output is in servitude to big brands. Hear me out! I do my best to make sure that big business is doing the least amount of harm with its advertising and marketing and I’m a vocal proponent of effecting incremental change toward more ethical and inclusive practices from within a pretty problematic industry. I recently wrote and designed a book on the same topic called Ethical Sellout. When I’m not doing corporate work, I love to collaborate with small businesses and support community non-profits with pro bono design and branding work.

Q: How do you identify? How do you think your identity is reflected in your work?
A: I identify as queer in all aspects of the word and am happy with the pronouns she/hers and they/them. I have white settler ancestry and do my best to be aware of that privilege and advocate nd support where I can. My identity is directly reflected in my work; I believe that my focus on social impact, ethics, and inclusivity is a direct result of firsthand experience with gender-and-sexuality-based discrimination.

Q: Do you have a coming out story to share?
A: I am grateful to share that my coming out story is rather uneventful. Sure there were some fraught moments, but I got a lot of love and acceptance pretty quickly. The initial conversation went a little like:

Me: I’m dating a woman.
My straight Mom: Your aunts always thought I was a lesbian
Me: …

Q: Since we’re all about fashion… what’s your power outfit that makes you feel like the best version of yourself?
A: Blazer. PDL button-up. Black jeans. Brogue boots. I became so well known for my power outfit in my last job that I got the nickname “Major Blazer”

Q: What’s an unexpected fact about you?
A: I’m a pretty extreme introvert and I struggle with lifelong anxiety and major clinical depression. The work I’ve done as a creative director requires a lot of presenting, leadership, and public appearance. People assume I’m a natural extrovert, that I love being the centre of attention, and I’m comfortable speaking publicly when in reality my happy place is curled up in bed in complete silence with a good book and a cup of tea. I think it’s really powerful to be real with each other about these aspects of our identities and the parts of our world that can feel challenging.

Q: Which charity have you chosen to support with your design and why?
A: I chose QMUNITY because of the important community work they do for queer, trans, and two-spirit folks and their commitment to making mental health and counselling services more accessible. I would love to split the proceeds between QMUNITY in Vancouver and the 519 in Toronto which is another queer community organization who does really critical work for new queer refugees..

Size & Fit

Button-Up Sizing Guide

Fit is incredibly personal - some like their shirts to fit snugly around their body while others prefer to wear them looser. We've provided a number of fit charts below to help you find your fit. Note that there are some variations in the way different fabrics will hang on your body, and some shirts will fit more snugly than others. We recommend always sizing up in flannel.

If you're at the top 1 - 1.5 inches of the bust range, you will likely have to release the box pleat.

Below are the flatlay measurement charts for our Alpha shirts. We have shown our measurements taken from lying the garment flat and measuring in inches. We recommend grabbing a shirt you own in similar fabric and comparing!

In between sizes? Go for the smaller one - there’s a pleat in the back of every PDL shirt that you can remove with a seam ripper - this will give an extra 1½ inches in the chest to prevent button-gape.

Fit Guide by Style

One of PDL's foundational values is to create classic products. That’s why we have a suite of standard styles that we make in an assortment of fabrics. Once you know your fit in a particular style, you’ll be ready to snap it up when a limited edition upcycled fabric you love pops into our collection!

We've photographed a variety of styles on a few different bodies so you can get an idea of how our shirts might look on you. If your questions aren't answered here, please get in touch with us for personalized fit advice.

The PDL classic Alpha fit. A box pleat half-sewn down in the back for easy size adjustments, a collar that buttons down at the lapels, and our signature inside pocket. Available in a wide variety of fabrics, from flannel to Oxford to poplin and more, in short sleeve or long sleeve. > learn more about the box pleat and how it lets you customize your fit here.

A more formal take on our classic shirt, the button up features no lapel buttons and a stiffer collar that holds its shape. Typically made of stiffer, more premium fabrics, this is your go-to shirt for a formal event. It has an ever-so-slightly slimmer and shorter form (about 1cm shorter in the sleeve and torso) than our typical Alpha fit, with the same shoulder width.

Fashion-forward and unique, the collarless shirt features a modified, relaxed Alpha fit with no pocket and an open box pleat – making it less fitted in the body. You can sew the box pleat down yourself if you want a snugger fit.

Our terms for an unlined light shirt-jacket perfect for wearing while you walk. Our jackets are made out of heavier fabrics, from cotton flannel to wool to corduroy, and feature our signature embroidered pocket on the outside of the left breast. The car coat has outside patch pockets while the walking jacket has slit pockets for your hands.

Our flannels come in almost all our collar and body styles, but they’re special in that they tend to fit snugly – especially since we tend to wear them over a tee shirt – and they’re more likely to shrink in the wash. Therefore, we recommend you always size up in flannel.

Our size 4 model is 5'9", with a 34" bust, 25" waist, and 32" hips.

Our size 8 model is 5'9", with a 36.5" bust, 30.5" waist, and 42" hips.

Our size 16 model is 5'10".

Customizing Your Shirt with the Box Pleat

The box pleat at the back of PDL shirts allows for a bit of flexibility in sizing. Note: collarless shirts do not have their pleat sewn down by default.

Removing the Pleat for More Space in the Bust

If your shirt fits in the shoulders and arms but is a little snug through the bust, you can remove the pleat to gain an extra inch and a half in that area. Kindly note that shirts with the pleat removed are no longer eligible for exchange or refund.

To remove the pleat, you will need a seam ripper. This little tool comes with most sewing machines and sewing kits. Watch the video below to see how it's done:

Extending the Pleat to Take Your Shirt In at the Hips

If the shirt is too roomy around the hips, you can also extend the pleat to take the shirt in by 1 - 1.5inches from the waist down. This is a pretty simple sewing job if you have the skills. You'll need a sewing machine and an iron. Kindly note that all modified shirts are ineligible for return/exchange.
